Can a math teacher teach gpt3?
I received an email today. I was given access to gpt3’s beta.
I was interested in the new possibilities that opened up before me — of exploring that “eighth wonder” of the world. I was excited and fueled by dreams, that I would soon be in a position to automate the mundane aspects of my life that make me miserable.
One of my friends, who also happens to be a data scientist, offered that I try teaching it an algorithm explicitly and see how well the program can comprehend my instructions.
Let me not ruin your fun in finding out for yourself.
But I can tell you one thing — something unexpected occurred there that I almost missed…
The actual conversation
We had this conversation:
The following is a conversation with an AI assistant. The assistant is helpful, creative, clever, and very friendly.

Human: you need to multiply the number I gave you by the sum of it’s digits. So let’s say I gave you 23, Then “the number” is 23 and “the sum of it’s digits” is 5. “Multiply the number by the sum of it’s digits” means you multiply 23 by 5. The result is 115 which is odd therefore — I win.
